Press Release Body = Award-winning Canadian author, syndicated columnist, and
entertainer Gordon Kirkland announced today that work has been completed on his
fifth collection of short humor. His material has made him a reader and audience
favorite throughout Canada and the United States. The book will be published by
AuthorHouse in the United States and launched June 1st at BookExpo-America in New
York, where Kirkland will be one of the featured signing authors.
Kirkland has a policy of giving his books titles that readers don't soon
forget. Previous titles include Justice Is Blind - And Her Dog Just Peed In My
Cornflakes (Harbour, 1999), Never Stand Behind A Loaded Horse (Thistledown,
2004), When My Mind Wanders It Brings Back Souvenirs (AuthorHouse, 2005), and I
Think I'm Having One Of Those Decades (AuthorHouse 2006).
The new book follows the trend. It will be called I May Be Big, But I Didn't
Cause That Solar Eclipse. He often jokes about the 'sheer mass of humanity'
that hangs from his 6'4" frame. His 2004 live comedy CD was called I'm Big For
My Age.
The new book includes a full range of the topics his readers have come to
expect. As usual, many of them poke a good deal of fun at himself as he deals
with marriage and family life, current events, buying and selling a new home
(or as he calls it 'having a movement'), and fighting a speeding ticket. He
even finds a lighter side to falling victim to atypical pneumonia linked to
Legionnaires' Disease while doing a performance in Washington, DC. Throughout
the over seventy stories in the book, Kirkland proves once again that he can
find humor in just about any subject or situation.
As an April 2006 profile published in the Canadian edition of Reader's Digest
said, "Kirkland's specialty is making others laugh at him, at themselves, and
at life in general."
He received Canada's Stephen Leacock Award Of Merit For Humour for each of his first
three books. He has twice been named to the faculty of the Erma Bombeck Writers'
Workshop at the University of Dayton in Ohio; the first Canadian writer honored in
this way.
I May Be Big But I Didn't Cause That Solar Eclipse will reinforce what comic
strip creator Lynn Johnston (For Better Or For Worse) says about Kirkland: "His
writing proves that we're all in the same boat. It just leaks in different
places."
Kirkland suffered a serious spinal injury in a 1990 automobile accident. Prior
to that event he specialized in business writing in a career that included work
in both the public and private sectors. He started writing humor in 1994 after
a chance meeting with a newspaper editor. His syndicated column, Gordon
Kirkland At Large, now appears in newspapers in both Canada and the United
States. He is also a frequent guest on radio and television programs in both
countries.
Gordon Kirkland lives in a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia with Diane,
his wife of thirty-three years and his disability assistance dog, Tara. They
have two grown sons, Mike and Brad.
